![]() Few acrylic shades meet the criteria of surgical inks in all three methods. ![]() You can get really interesting effects with the alcohol inks in resin but unless your resin has good UV-protection, alcohol ink colors can fade over time. Pigment based acrylic inks are much more opaque and light-fast than the dye based alcohol inks. Results were best with Method 3 followed by Method 1 and 2, respectively.Īcrylic colours have more advantages compared to India ink. Inks india ink, acrylic ink and alcohol ink. Shade #09 showed loss of colour and the shade #23 showed penetration into deeper tissues on microscopy. Shades #64, #18, #09, #23 had poor microscopic visibility in all three methods. Coloured inks were assessed on different parameters for their performance as surgical ink and given scores.Īcrylic shades #04, #22, #06, #01, #02 and India ink had very good to excellent score on microscopy in all three methods. The following day, it was re-coloured with the same colours as of the previous day and subsequently sections were taken. In Method 3, the specimen was inked and kept for overnight fixation. In Method 2, the specimen was inked and kept for overnight fixation. In Method 1, coloured inks were applied to an overnight formalin fixed specimen and representative sections were taken. Thirteen acrylic colours along with India ink were evaluated via three different methods on radical specimens of breast and colon after preliminary requisites of grossing were completed. The present study was undertaken to analyse acrylic colours and Indian ink for inking surgical margins via three different methods for optimum results. ![]() On other hand acrylic colours, available in variety of colours can be used for inking multiple margins along with many more advantages. India ink has long been used but it can ink only one margin. Bombay India Inks are a lightfast, waterproof, shellac and pigment based liquid available in glass or plastic bottles. ![]() Personally, I’m a minimalist and like the idea of just an india ink and watercolor combo myself but there are so many choices out there if you’re into experimenting.Proper identification of surgical margins along with margin status holds utmost importance in histopathology. Pretty interesting if you’re into experimenting. I’ve read that they work very well with dip pens. They are essentially watered down acrylics and like acrylics, are pigment based and water proof when dry. I’ve read reviews on both Speedball tends to be preferred over Higgins.Īcrylic inks – I just discovered these last week. 152 Alcohol ink vs Acrylic Ink vs Bombay ink Comparison, Reaction with Alcohol & Water & Blanco. I would try Speedball if you dislike Higgins. India ink is pigmented ink made from carbon black and typically contains shellac to give it its waterproof properties. Technical pens can also take pigmented ink with diligent care. These are suitable for dip pens or brush work as there is no danger of clogging. It depends on the pigment, but they tend to be more lightfast than dye based inks. Pigments are not watersoluble and pigmented ink consists of tiny particles suspended in liquid. Fountain pens tend to be dye based as pigments can clog their feeds. Looks like you’ve already got a great reply from Hoplite, but I’ll add what I think I know as well.ĭyes are water soluble and not as lightfastness as pigments. As usual, I’ve gone way overboard on the amount of information I really need to know. Hiya, I’ve been researching this myself as I have been shopping for art supplies. Shading inks – those that naturally aren’t all that opaque and the heavier you lay it on the darker, tend not to be India ink (which are supposed to be dense and black and cover well), but some dye and acrylic (the less opaque) do. Speedball is blacker, but not quite as waterproof, and doesn’t in my estimation flow as well. Flows well, drys very fast, reasonably opaque but can be thinned, flat, waterproof, holds up to erasing – not the absolute blackest. India inks tend to have different properties depending on the manufacturer or the line. Whether that still holds or not, I really have no idea, but looking at my Speedball Super Black India Ink, it claims to be from 100% carbon pigment. India Ink was traditionally made from lampblack (basically, carbon soot). They tend to clog mechanical pens, have varying opacity depending on the pigment (from very transparent to very opaque), and generally have better lightfast qualities.Īcrylic inks use pigments – Liquitex Acrylic Ink, FW Ink. Pigments are finely ground particles suspended in a (in this case) liquid medium. Dyes go into solution, tend to be less opaque, tend to be less lightfast, and generally are more fluid. ![]()
